I have built my career in the ‘man’s world’ at one of the largest Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) companies in the world. Working as a woman in the technical industry, where men predominantly work, is not always easy. The key is to continue leveraging your own authenticity because, as a woman, you have so much to offer!
I have actively committed to helping women advance to meaningful leadership positions.
Here are a few tips:
Tip 1: Be Authentic
Don’t waste your time trying to be someone else; always strive to be a better version of yourself. Cherish your qualities. With the necessary self-awareness, you know your talents and pitfalls. Take the time to understand your core values and incorporate them into the choices you make.
Tip 2: Believe in Yourself
It’s important to have a positive self-image. Negative thoughts about yourself often stem from fear and limiting beliefs. And what you think is often what you feel.
Tip 3: Have a Career Development Plan
A career development plan is the foundation to realizing your ambitions. It helps you explore what you want to learn and what you need to learn to get there. It gives you control over your career and leads to more enjoyment in your work.
Tip 4: Dare to Express your wishes
Clearly express your needs and ambitions. Keeping these modestly to yourself means you miss out on opportunities. What a waste!
Tip 5: Be Supportive of Other Women
Celebrate your own successes and those of others. Help each other.
Tip 6: Invest in Your Network
Take the time to invest in relationships. When people know you, they are more likely to think of you when vacancies arise.
